IoT for Sustainability: Prototyping, Pilot Deployment, Case Studies and Insights

Abstract: The IoT paradigm manifests itself in a myriad of applications such as smart cities, intelligent transportation systems, smart grids, industrial and critical infrastructure monitoring, low cost e-healthcare, logistics, home automation, safety etc. The focus of this tutorial is on the application of IoT to realize a practical smart connected system that contributes towards addressing sustainability goals. In light of the global environmental concerns, there is an increasing push worldwide to reduce CO2 emissions with governments pledging to emission targets. Buildings are one of the heavy consumers of energy and water resources and a dominant contributor to the global CO2 footprint. This tutorial will examine the challenges in developing and deploying IoT solutions to enhance operational efficiency and environmental footprint of buildings. In the first half of this tutorial, we will elaborate on the challenges, design, implementation and deployment of low cost, scalable and easy to deploy proof-of-concept prototypes that we have developed as a part of our research into smart connected systems. In the second half of the tutorial, we  will demo and work alongside participants (in groups as needed) to build a quick proof of concept IoT solution using off-the-shelf components. The nature of this topic being inter-disciplinary and applied, the objectives of this tutorial are to engage the audience through hands-on learning and also generate discussion that would enable them to come up with solutions to problems that they may be aware of / uncover during the discussions.
